Plugged In?

Wednesday mornings I attend a ladies Bible study at my church. We just started a Beth Moore study, the brand-newiest-one on Deuteronomy. I have been studied with this group of ladies since Spring 2000. We’ve studied a lot, we’ve shared a lot, we’ve cried a lot, we’ve done a lot of life a lot, we’ve loved a lot. But most importantly, we’ve grown a lot. Some ladies have left and others have joined but still the study goes on.

We started with Kay Arthur‘s Lord series. We each had homework every day and our “message” was delivered via cassette tape that had to be flipped over half way through. I remember the first time we had a man delivering the message in place of Kay. We thought it odd and didn’t like him near as much as Kay. Not that he was bad at all, just not what we were used to. Over the years we moved to vhs tapes of the messages as we ventured out and away from Kay Arthur. Not that we stopped liking her, we just moved to other things and yes, we do still use some of her material.  Now we’ve moved to dvds with surround sound.

Which leads to technical problems on occasion. Like this past Wednesday. I walked in the door thinking of all the things I needed to before study started. I had to walk around and greet each lady and hopefully make her feel welcome and give her a reason to smile. I had to make the coffee because that’s what I do. Some ladies can teach, some can sing, I can make coffee. I was also contemplating whether or not I’d need to make copies of the video session notes for anyone that did not yet have a book.

So as you can plainly see, my mind was completely preoccupied with “necessary” actions. But when I walked in the door all of those flew right out of my mind when I heard a friend say, “Good! You’re here. You can fix it.” The tv was not talking with the dvd player, or maybe it was the other way around. Maybe both weren’t speaking to the other. I don’t know. All I know for sure is jumping across the screen was the words, “No Signal”. I first asked if they were both on the same channel. At home we had gone over a month thinking our vcr/dvd player was dead when all we had to do was change the channel on our tv.

No one knew. I tried getting the channel to change on the tv and it was a no go. So obviously that wasn’t the trouble. Next I tried changing the input on the tv. The ladies told me they had already tried all of those and nothing fixed it.

About this time I noticed a cable hanging from the back of the tv and asked, “What’s this for?” I was told it was to hook a laptop to the tv. Ahhh so that’s not it. I’m overhearing two ladies talking about who they can call and deciding to try to call the associate pastor. When they tried they first only reached his voice mail, but on the next try he answered. He wasn’t all that helpful. I’m not being rude and honestly I can’t remember what exactly was said because I was puzzling why it wasn’t working.  It was recommended that we call the church’s IT guy. I was the only one who had his number so I called him and he wasn’t available.

I decide if that cable went to the laptop that was right there, why not just use the laptop? I took the disc out of the dvd player and put it in the drive of the computer. Only it wouldn’t play. About this time the associate pastor comes and switches the input from “PC” to “HDMI 1″. I told him I had the disc in the computer and so to try the player again we’d need to eject it.

The computer would not give up the disc. Apparently it likes Beth Moore also.  It was only after struggling and wanting to bash the computer into next week, that we realized the batter was dead and the power cord had a short and wasn’t charging. I finally get the green light on the power cord to come on and quickly the pastor ejects the disc.  (I did tell him I would be extremely dead if we couldn’t get the disc out. The secretary, who was also in there by now, and I were making plans to make a fast getaway and go for coffee, pretending we had no clue.)

Another man in our church came to help also, and it was him who noticed the dvd player was not plugged into the tv. The cable I had seen hanging down the wall actually was supposed to be plugged into the back of the dvd player.

I felt a little more than a lot stupid until the IT guy sees me after Bible study and asks if it was plugged in. I told him the story blaming a Sunday School teacher for unplugging it and not plugging it back in, the IT guy smiles at me and tells me I’m sadly mistaken. It wasn’t the SS teacher, no, it was the associate pastor who had unplugged it.

Just like the tv did not receive the signal from the dvd player because it was unplugged, we don’t receive a signal from the Holy Spirit when are spiritually unplugged. We neglect the Word at home during the week, we fail to pray, and we are disconnected from our life source. And we wonder why life doesn’t work.

We need to get plugged back into the power source.  It’s more than just going to church on Sunday, it’s how we live every day. We need to take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ. We need to keep short accounts with God. We need to confess our sins and repent. By repent I mean we have to turn from our sins, even our personal favorites. We need to exchange our life for His life.  We need to deny ourselves, we need to say with Paul, “I have been crucified with Christ” and live like it.

It’s not easy, not at all. Our old sinful nature hangs on and loves nothing more than tripping us up and making us obey it. It desires what it desires and it wants it now. Whenever we give into the flesh, we will find a disconnect with our true Power Source, we will disconnect from the God who created us, who loves us infinitely more than anyone else.

House of Mercy

Bethany Borzoi is a young adult who loves horses. Her family owns a ranch that has been in their family for several generations. House of Mercy is the story of Bethany.

House of Mercy is the latest novel offering from Erin Healy. The book starts with the main character, Bethany Borzoi, stealing a saddle to help someone care for their horse.  Right off the bat I knew I would have issues with this book. I am opposed to any book that glosses over sin and shows no consequence for it.

I was also unsettled when Bethany appears to have the ability to heal animals because of the presence of a grey wolf. A wolf that had attacked her and disappeared.

I honestly found the book to be extremely odd.

I received a free copy of House of Mercy from the publisher for the purpose of review.

Change Your Heart and Life

Sounds rather bold and bossy of me, doesn’t it?

Psalm 51:10 reads, “Create a clean heart for me, God; put a new, faithful spirit deep inside me!”  (The Common English Version). I desire that for myself.

King David penned those words, under the direction of the Holy Spirit after his horrific sin with Bathsheba. You might know the story. King David didn’t go out to war with all the kings one Spring. Instead he stays in Jerusalem and walks on his balcony. From that vantage point he sees a lady bathing on her own rooftop. He can’t help but stare as she is incredibly beautiful. He refuses to listen to reason as his men tell him whose wife she is, and sends for her.

A few weeks later she sends a message to David saying she is pregnant. David decides to take matters into his own hands and hide the fact that the baby could only be his. In his attempts at handling it and hiding it, he has Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband killed.

But God saw it all. And God knew. He sent Nathan the prophet to David to pronounce his consequence for this sin. As a result David wrote Psalm 51.

I haven’t done anything as grievous as David did but it doesn’t mean my sin is any less horrific to a Holy God. Every day I find I need to pray this very verse, Create a clean heart in me, God; put a new, faithful spirit deep inside me!”

Don’t you? I find it such a struggle to just obey. But without a doubt the more I do it, the more I bend my will until  it is His will, the easier it is. The more I pray He will create a pure heart in me, the easier it is to walk in that creation.

How are you choosing to change your heart and life?

Rantin’ an’ Raven.

This has nothing to do with ravens at all. Either the bird or the football team.  More about raving like a freaking lunatic.

I comment often on my advanced age. All the while telling my dear sweet friend who is approaching 70 that she isn’t old. I know that is somewhat of an oxymoron, I tell her she isn’t old while calling my age “advanced”. But look at it this way, I’ve never been this old before in my life.  With my advancing age I am noticing different things happening.

My memory is going. My joints creak. I’m ready for bed by 8 most nights. I’m getting up earlier. I’m also noticing they make print very small, practically miniscule anymore. I’ve noticed this particularly with my Bibles.

I don’t know what the publishers are thinking. Maybe “If I make the print small enough, satan can’t read it?” If that is the case, they should realize he doesn’t read it. He knows it.

It isn’t limited to one version either. My NASB, my NIV and my HCSB all have print you need a magnifying glass to see.  So I have been on the hunt for a new Bible with print big enough to be read while my Bible rests on the table.

Yes, it has come to that. I can’t set my Bible on the table (or my lap) and read it. I have to pick it up and hold it inches from my nose.  It’s not a eyeglass problem, lest you think I just need a stronger prescription. I just had my eyes checked last October and received a stronger prescription. Yes indeedy. And the lovely eye doctor (is it considered rude to call a man “lovely”? Just checkin’. If it is insert any other adjective you feel would be better) told me chances are good, with my advanced age, (at that time…and just think I’ve aged more since then) next year I will need bifocals.

Lovely. Maybe Mr. FullCup will also get me a hearing aid and a walker so my ensemble will be complete.

I thought a test for those needing bifocals was if they could see something’s better without their glasses then they would need them. I’m not there at all. With my glasses I see just fine and dandy (as long as I’m not reading the Bible that is) without my glasses, well, without them I can’t even see the Bible on the table.

Yes. I am that blind.

Anyway, enough about my eyes. Yesterday we received a catalog in the mail from a prominent Christian book company and I immediately flipped to the section for Bibles. I was shocked and astounded that there are Bibles with a price tag of over one hundred dollars!

Really.  Now this place discounts them considerably but spending $80-95 on a Bible is outrageous. I think this is horrible. I honestly wonder how much the publishing company pockets of that price.  Making a buck on God‘s word. I think it is despicable that the publishing houses “own” the copyright to God’s Word and make some people fight tooth and nail to use it. But to turn around and charge exorbitant prices is maddening.

I keep thinking of Jesus driving out the moneychangers from the temple. Different scenario, I know, but still. How does God feel about the price we put on a Bible? He gave it freely, shouldn’t we do the same?

Showing Love and Hospitality

(Guest Blogger today!)

Before we are inspired about how to show love to others, we must first ask why?

Quite simply it is because in Romans 12:10 & 13 we are told to be devoted to one another in brotherly love, to honor one another above ourselves.  We are also told to share with God’s people who are in need and to Practice Hospitality. Notice the vocabulary: practice, not perfect.

In America, as a culture and as individuals, we are suffering in part because popular media gears everything to perfection. We are bombarded with messages that if we aren’t the very best at something, we just shouldn’t bother. We compare ourselves to others, rather than knowing our worth in God’s eyes.

I suffer from insecurity and wonder if I can be creative enough to inspire.  Are my tips original? Are the photographs beautiful enough? Are my suggestions too simple for some, but too fancy for another?  The problem: my thoughts revolve completely around meMy creativity, my skills, my ability.  This is not about me but about God’s purpose for me. I suddenly realize the bigger picture; I can’t do it, but I can through Christ who strengthens me.

This dance in my mind between my preciousness in His sight and the enemy’s interjections has slowed me down at times, but God showed me this dance is the very reason for us to love others; to encourage each other. Because we are human we suffer from doubt, insecurity, and rejection of one sort or another.  We are God’s tool to encourage others. God uses us as His hands to love others, but make no mistake it is Hispower, His grace and the Holy Spirit that do the real work, not ours.

God’s path of creativity in me began with a family history of silversmithing eight generations back, a degree from USC, design school in Paris, then design school in Los Angeles. Call them spiritual or otherwise, but they were the gifts God saw fit to give to me. Who am I to argue with my Creator? They are unique and I celebrate them. What are your magnificent and unique gifts that you can use to inspire others?

I do not want the gifts received as a blessing from God to “turn into spiritual dry rot,” as Ann Voscamp suggests in her bookOne Thousand Gifts, as the manna did when it was hoarded in Exodus 16:20. I want to use my blessings.

Inadequacies and all, imperfections and all: I want to inspire others to practice Hospitality and to LOVE others.

Creative Ways to Encourage Others on Valentine’s Day

KIND WORDS

A handwritten note with quotes, scriptures and words of encouragement is a wonderful thing to find in the mailbox.

Leave a sticky note on your child/husband’s pillow or be bold and write your note on the bathroom mirror or car window in red lipstick saying “I love you”.

Even an email just to say “thank you for your hard work, you bless me” can make a person’s day. A cute poem, scripture or old photograph will remind them they are remembered.

If someone has lost a loved one, kind words of some way that loved one inspired you to do something better will let them know that their loved one’s legacy is living on.

AN INVITATION, TIME

Take some time out of your days to meet someone for coffee, lunch, a long walk, or even just leave a phone message with a sweet sentiment. If you have more time, take a picnic basket to their home. Set up a lunch, tea or coffee, with all your tea cups and a candle. It is a lovely surprise! Just rinse when you finish and pack back up so they don’t even have to do dishes. They will have a lovely memory of a special time.

THOUGHTFUL GESTURE

Hang flowers on the front door handle, leave a pretty tiny package in the mailbox with a beautiful red bow, or cookies delivered to the front door. Create a breakfast plate for your child that says you are special . This is especially significant if your child has struggled with something recently.

A BEAUTIFUL DINNER

Of course this takes more time, but try for a beautiful table setting complete with candles, fresh greens or flowers and a lovely menu either handwritten or printed out on your computer. (Visit Roxanne’s Pinterest account, via the Inspired Design blog, for darling printouts, including gift tags, and much more.) Don’t concentrate on the gourmet or complicated quality of the meal: remember it is about relationship and encouragement!

VALENTINE’S DINNER

A beautiful table for Valentine’s simply consists of reds, pinks and perhaps some purple. (Although it could be beautiful in all white too.) Of course, it has to have some hearts and some colorful candles. Leave kind words of some sort on each place setting. Every Valentine’s table should have its share of sparkle, of course!

Jesus — The Reason For the Season

By: Rachel Hauck

Through the narrow scope of 2000 years, Mary, the mother of Jesus, appears to be one lucky woman. Chosen by God to give birth to His son, the Savior of the world? All right, Mary, way to go.

“Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you,” Gabriel said.

How many of us would like a declaration like that? Highly favored. The Lord is with you. But Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

The angel told her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Mary’s seems confident and resolved when she responds, “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”

She’d just been told the Holy Spirit will come upon her, that God’s power will overshadow her, that she’d become with child even though she wasn’t married, and she said, “I’m the Lord’s servant. Let your words be true.”

I find this amazing! A young woman. Ancient Bethlehem. Unwed mother. They stoned women for such things in her day. But Mary believed in God. And submitted to His will. He gave her the Holy Spirit – the same Holy Spirit given to us. If He gave her confidence, He will give us confidence. Even though, like Mary, our situation seems impossible.

Listen to Mary’s song later on in the first chapter of Luke.

“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me Holy is his name…”

Conceiving a child out of wedlock, by Divine intervention. Not a girl’s every day existence. Yet she had a Yes in her heart to God. She rejoiced. She boldly said, “Generations will remember me!”

How we struggle to trust God with our children. Our finances. Our emotional well-being. We worry. We fret. And wonder why we have no peace.

Christmas is the season where words like joy, peace and love are bantered around like Christmas candy. Let’s not take them as just words, but as truth. Let’s be like Mary and embrace God’s favor on our lives. Boldly declare “He’s done great things for me!”

Out of the grit of our own souls, we can reach His heart, and feel Him reaching for ours. No matter the pain of our past, present or future, God is there for us. He is able. Best of all, He is willing. “My soul glorifies the Lord this Christmas!”
