Of stop signs and thoughts

I just had a funny thought, “Since I did ‘Wordless Wednesday‘, should today be ‘Thoughtless Thursday'”. Because I’m very good at that. The following conversation routinely happens at my house,

Dear Man: Do you think……..
Me: Not unless I have nothing better to do.

And it’s true. Kind of. Sort of. In a way. Maybe. Okay so my mind doesn’t really take a break but at times I really wonder. I’m sure others do as well.  Some of the things I get myself into because I didn’t think and some of the things I say because I didn’t think…whooooooo boy you don’t want to go there.

For example, I’ve been known to say “If you don’t stop, you can go.” Yeah like that makes a ton of sense. I’ve even, in talking to someone with the following names, unknowingly said, “What’s up, Chuck?” “I have a question, Mark”, and “Welcome, Matt”.

With the “if you don’t stop, you can go” statement, I was in fact encouraging Mr. FullCup to not stop at a stop sign. Not that I wanted him to run the sign per se, but just not to fully stop. He choose, wisely choose, to come to a full and complete stop.

People in my town just don’t do that. I have honestly considered becoming a hermit because it’s just not safe to be out anywhere in town. You take your life into your own hands. The other day I was stopped at a red light. I don’t know about in your town but here the when the light changes from green to red, before the other people get a green light there is a pause while it is still red. I’m sure that is just enabling those people who think red only means “stop if you want to. Otherwise feel free to keep moving.”

On this particular day I was sitting at the red light. Directly across the intersection from me was a police man. In fact there were two police men. One had just served as the crossing guard because I was near a school. He was putting his brilliant green vest away when my light changed to green.

Apparently the kindly officer across from me doesn’t realize the need to wait before darting into the intersection as soon as the light turns green. He started into his turn and a pick up truck ran the light. Nearly smacking the nice officer into next week.

Now my friends who are on “the force” call that a “Gimme”. It’s someone not quite smart enough to think through doing some stupid in front of a police officer.  They are asking for a ticket.

I was excited. Not because I wish ill on anyone who runs a light. But honestly, I’m tired of it. I’m tired of always wondering “is that person really going to stop?” I have long longed for the police to step up and start putting a stop to this bad habit.

The officers did nothing. The one nearly smacked into the next century merely waited until the truck was past and then went on his merry way and completed his turn in the opposite direction.  I consider getting out of my van and running on foot down the street screeching “Citizen’s Arrest” in my very best Gomer Pyle impersonation but I refrained. Probably because I was afraid I would be the one thrown into the pokey.
