Several years ago I was introduced to Neta Jackson through her Yada Yada Prayer Group books. Upon first read, I was hooked. I love her style of throwing the reader into the daily life of the characters in her books. Weeks after reading one of Neta Jackson’s books I find myself wondering how Jodi is doing, and I’ll reach for the phone before I realize Jodi isn’t real. Jodi is a character in a book. But she seems like my best friend.
I just finished another Neta Jackson book, Stand By Me. This book is further look into the life of Avis Douglass, the affable elementary school principal in the Yada Yada book series. Avis meets Kathryn, “Kat” Davies when Kat shows up at church with some food she scrounged from the dumpster behind the grocery store. Kat grew up in an affluent family in Phoenix, found Jesus, switched colleges and major. Kat thought she was doing something kind for the church. But the church didn’t feel that way.
Avis takes an almost immediate dislike for Kat. She finds her outspoken and entirely too impulsive. But what happens when Kat jumps in and does something that is good?
What if Kat finds an apartment to rent with three friends in Avis’ building? How will Avis handle that? Is there anything that can bring Avis and Kat together?
What about Avis’ daughter? Is there hope for that relationship too?
“Kat’s flamboyant zeal for living a ‘radical’ Christian life is a stark contrast to Avis’ more reserved faith. But in God‘s timing, the two women discover they need each other in ways neither of them expected.”
Really, if you have read Neta Jackson’s other books or even if you haven’t, you will want to read this book!
