Allison Kavanaugh inherited her aunt’s house in the mountains of Idaho. She hadn’t intended on ever using it, but when she issues an ultimatum to her alcoholic husband, she finds herself needing a place to live.
Her marriage ended, her husband gone, she thinks her life is almost over. Then she finds a box of her aunt’s journals and starts to read. Her Aunt Emma was a famous photographer, famous for her nature photographs, but when Allison finds a box of her aunt’s photos of people, she wonders who the man is with her aunt. As far as she knows, and everyone in the family knows Emma never married.
Through the journey of a year Allison learns to rely again on her God, she makes new friends, she learns that the grieving process takes time. She learns what she thought was an ending…a permanent ending really was God working out a new beginning. She learns God really does restore the years the locusts have eaten.
Robin Lee Hatcher weaves a masterful story about love, family and redemption. It is somewhat biographical as she and her husband went through a very similar time. The characters are for the most part, completely believable, since they are based on Robin and her husband. However, I thought the character of Allison’s daughter could have been developed a little deeper.
All in all, this is an EXCELLENT book. I highly recommend it. It is hard, not impossible, but hard to put down. I give it 5 turning pages.
